Karen Warner

BEd

Karen Warner retired from school teaching in June 2021, and now enjoys substitute teaching for the fiddle programs in the Seven Oaks School Division. Before retiring, she taught fiddle in the Seven Oaks School Division from 2010 until 2021. Prior to 2010, Karen taught in the Dauphin School Area and in the Winnipeg School Division (River Heights Junior High School). She has been active in teaching private violin lessons and group lessons since 1983.

Karen studied at the University of Winnipeg, Brandon University, and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. She is a member of the Mennonite Community Orchestra, leads the Bel Canto String Quartet, and freelances in various musical productions. She holds a Performer’s A.R.C.T. and A.M.M. in both piano and violin, receiving a Gold Medal for her A.R.C.T. in violin.

While classical music will always be part of her life, during her time teaching fiddle in the SOSD, Karen discovered a great love for traditional fiddle tunes, particularly Cape Breton, Scottish, Metis, and Irish tunes. Highlights from her teaching career were definitely the times spent directing fiddle groups of young students, and organizing and playing in jamborees with her students.

She has been a judge at the three most recent Manitoba Open Fiddle Championships and goes to fiddle camps whenever possible!
